Religion Curriculum

The religion department curriculum includes traditional Biblical studies, surveys of modern ethical problems, and Catholic philosophy for daily living. For complete descriptions of these courses, refer to the Curriculum Guide. In addition, the environment of St. Frederick provides a religious atmosphere as a basis for all its curricular and co-curricular activities.

Liturgies

The community of St. Frederick celebrates the Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass) weekly. Periodically all-school liturgies are held to celebrate Holy Days of the Catholic Church and special occasions such as Homecoming or the end of school.

Celebrating Mass together is one way that our school builds community. All students, both Catholic and non-Catholic, attend. All students are welcome to participate by joining in the prayers, singing, listening, and responding reverently; and serving as lectors, music ministers, gift bearers, and cross bearers or assisting in planning the celebration. Catholic students age 16 or above may be selected to be commissioned as Eucharistic Ministers.

Other Prayer Experiences

Because the school believes in its mission to assist students in developing a relationship with Jesus Christ, students have many opportunities for prayer, reflection and reconciliation. The Chapel of Saints Daniel and Mary is open at all times of the school day. Area priests visit campus periodically for penance services, allowing all students the opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. The student body also participates in prayer services.

... to be living examples of the teachings of Jesus Christ

The community service component of the religion program is a real-life religion lab. Through community service experiences, all students are encouraged to move beyond their comfort zone, taking the Gospel message into the world, as Jesus commanded in the Great Commission.

Seventh and eighth graders participate in a service project involving the entire class. The project varies from year to year as needs arise.

Ninth graders visit the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home for their "Blue Grass Nights," escorting the residents to the event and dancing with them, serving snacks and performing karaoke. Freshmen also participate in a Pen Pal project with area homebound senior citizens or those living in nursing homes.

Upperclassmen are required to earn five service hours per quarter. They are presented opportunities to work in the community with those who cannot help themselves or non-profit agencies who work with this population. Students have served organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, St. Joseph Nursing Home, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the SVDP Pharmacy, Lions Club, Med Camps, the YWCA, Northeast Louisiana Food Bank and the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home, among many others.

Seniors who are eligible participate in a unique community service project: during the third nine weeks they are assigned to volunteer during their religion class at local schools, day care centers, and nursing homes, tutoring, teaching and visiting. This project instills a sense of service by practicing the mission of Jesus in reaching out and serving others.
